Kelly Smith Jones was just named Director of Education and Community Outreach for Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia where she has performed numerous roles; including Despina in Cosi fan tutte, Pamina, Lucia, and Manon in Fatal Song or The Great Opera Murders, Ernestina in Love’s Luggage Lost and the roles of Pamina and the First Lady in The (Mini) Magic Flute. Ms. Jones currently teaches Private Voice Lessons at The National Cathedral. She is a frequent soloist with The National Cathedral and Foundry United Methodist Church. At the Madeira School for 6 years, she was the private voice instructor, Director for Summer on Stage, Performing Arts Instructor for Girls First, and Conductor for the musical production of Annie. With Camp Arena Stage, she was the instructor for Show Choir, Advanced Musical Theater, Disney Duets, and Solo Voice Class. Ms. Jones made her Summer Opera Theatre debut in June 2007 as Beth in Little Women. Kelly was the featured soloist with Lorie Line Music on the 2006 Holiday Tour and The Traditions of Christmas CD. Ms. Jones has appeared as Marguerite in several productions of Faust. Her first foray into the role was with Opera in the Heights, a performance The Houston Press called “…radiant and dewy…, and her agile soprano soared through the ‘Jewel Song’ as though she’s been singing it all her young life… She triumphed in the finale’s stirring trio, sending her voice heavenward.” More recently she performed the role with DuPage Opera Theatre. With The Opera Company of North Carolina she performed Lolo and covered the role of Sylviane in The Merry Widow. Ms. Jones appeared in La Bohème, L’elisir d’amore, La clemenza di Tito, Dardanus, Street Scene, and Xerxes with the Wolf Trap Opera Company and Louisa Miller and Il Tabarro/Cavelleria Rusticana with Washington Concert Opera.
Other roles have included Edmée in the Musical Reading of Chéri for the Center for Contemporary Opera, Frasquita in Carmen with Union Avenue Opera Theatre, Kate in Yeoman of the Guard and Sacharissa in Princess Ida with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, and Celia in Iolanthe with Ocean State Lyric Opera. In addition, Ms. Jones covered the roles of Adele in Die Fledermaus with the Bronx Opera Company, and Phyllis in Iolanthe with Ocean State Lyric Opera.
Ms. Jones completed her Master of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music where she was featured as Phoebe in the World Premiere and Albany Records recording of The House of the Seven Gables.
As a Young Artist with Opera North, Ms. Jones covered the role of Mabel in Pirates of Penzance and performed scenes as Frasquita in Carmen and Lucia in Rape of Lucretia.
Ms. Jones received her Bachelor of Music degree at The Boston Conservatory, where she performed the leading role of Amor in L’Egisto as well as numerous roles in Opera Scenes including Nannetta in Falstaff, Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro, Alexandra in Regina, Catherine in Washington Square, and Papagena in Die Zauberflöte. |
